The Rice is on the Hob is an unusual and inspirational co-authored photobook-meets-cookbook collaboration between Tami Aftab and her father Tony.

Tony Aftab lives with short term memory loss resulting from the brain condition hydrocephalus. Despite memory loss impacting his day-to-day life, Tony has never forgotten the dishes of his childhood in Pakistan, and food and cooking have become a coping mechanism for living with a chronic disability. While growing up, Tami found that one of the strongest connections to her Pakistani heritage was through food. Visiting Pakistan with Tony in 2023 to shoot for the book was at first disorientating and even overwhelming at times, being in a space that is so unknown and yet so familiar. “But then I taste the food,” she says, “and that feels like home to me.”
